About the Project

Building Brighter Futures for Orphaned Girls in India

Nalam is a dedicated and efficient, small nonprofit committed to empowering orphaned girls in Andhra Pradesh, India. Nalam’s primary focus is on providing education, basic healthcare, safety, and daily meals for more than 135 girls, opening doors to freedom from societal challenges.

Our team developed research-backed portal to increase donor engagement with NALAM, by empowering donors to choose how their money is used, and allowing them to connect with real recipients.

Our team won the 2nd Prize at 2023GITSF Hackthon.

Problem

How might we drive donor engagement through storytelling?

Goal

Help NALAM increase donations by engaging donors through storytelling

The Challenge

Sprint in 3 days

Within 3 days, our team developed a personalized donor portal lets donors:

1. Choose donation projects based on their personal passion, so they are invested in their contribution
2. See progress updates, photos and thank you messages from the gift recipients,
3. And Helps them feel connected to the girls whose life they have changed

My role

Product Designer

I collaborated with another designer, two software developers, a product manager and a data analyst to deliver the product to the client.

Planning & scope definition

I collaborated with the team to define MVP goals, prioritize features, and negotiate business and user needs for the initial product launch.

experience strategy and vision

I developed frameworks, prototypes, and content strategies to align the team's vision, design principles, and decision-making processes.

Final Solution

Discover

Donors needs engagement, accountability and transparency

Deciding where to donate can be overwhelming. How can we convince potential donors that NALAM is worthy of their time and money? The answer is by understanding donors needs, and meeting them with engaging storytelling.

Ideate

How can we make this happen?

So what do donors want?
Donors want to feel that they are a part of someones story.

Studies show that 1) people are more willing to donate to an individual with a name and a face than to an anonymous beneficiary, and 2) people donate more when they see tangible details about how their money is used, so they really know they are making an impact.

Design+ Prototyping

Prototyping

In our donor portal, donors see a list of current projects and needs. For example, maybe the orphanage needs to fix a leak in the roof, or maybe one of the girls needs a medical procedure.

Selecting a Project to Donate

The donors can click on projects to read more about them, and decide where they want their money to go.

They can see how their contribution will move the project toward achieving the funding goal.

The donors can make a donation share this on social media, to ask their friends and followers to contribute

Progressive Validation for fully funded Project

When the project is fully funded and work begins, the orphanage volunteers will share photos/videos/messaged to update the donors on how the project is progressing

For example, if the project was to sponsored tuition fees, the volunteers might share a photo of the girls in school and some information about how they are doing in their classes

The donors will get an email prompting them to log in to see the project update message from the orphanage. Donors will see other projects they could contribute to (and hopefully will be excited to contribute more, after they see the impact of their previous contributions!)

Design the Admin Portal

Admin will be responsible for creating new projects and managing the funding for the existing projects.
